At the session on Thursday, the Luhansk City Council decided to implement the provisions of the law on the principles of national language policy, which provides for granting the Russian language the status of regional language.
58 registered members voted in favor of this decision (the total number of the City Council members is 76).
The City Council recognized that, by reference to in 2001census data, more than 10% of the residents of the city recognized Russian as their native language.
Hence, the Russian language becomes regional in Luhansk and can be used in official documents along with the state language.
