This season, Ukraine will produce approximately 1.8 million tons of sugar, minister of the agrarian policy and food Mykola Prysyazhnyuk said at the opening of the XXIV International Agricultural Exhibition "Agro-2012," ForUm correspondent reports.

The minister added that in 2011, 2.2 million tons were produced. "We have a high export potential, but a number of important markets for us has delivery restrictions. Last year, we increased exports of sugar two-fold, it is only a small part of our capabilities," the minister said.

Prysyazhnyuk said that the country is able to produce 5 million tons of sugar annually. "This year, 56 sugar plants will work. They will start working later due to the weather conditions. To protect from market fluctuations, some sugar plants differentiate risks by organizing production of bioethanol, we have such examples in Kyiv region," the official said.
