As of July 1 of this year, 1341 children, 94 girls including, have been serving their sentences in the Ukrainian penal colonies for minors, children's ombudsman Yuri Pavlenko told a briefing "On the immediate and urgent tasks of the President of Ukraine in the field of children's rights", ForUm correspondent reports.

"The conducted analysis has shown that 70% of children were convicted of theft, mainly of mobile phones, that is, of low-level crime. However, the term of imprisonment of most of them makes up from three to five years," he said.

In addition, Pavlenko said that almost 80% of children are serving sentences for repeat offense.
"This testifies to the ineffective prevention work in prisons," the children’s ombudsman said.
Pavlenko said that this year there is a positive trend of reducing crimes among children compared to last year.

"The number of crimes committed by children has decreased by more than 7%. However, for the eight months of 2012, children have committed more than ten thousand crimes," he said.

In addition, Pavlenko said that only in June-July 2075 children were victims of crimes, of whom 553 children were under 14. The felonies affected 707 children.

"The procedure of working with children, who have been victims of crime, is imperfect. Such children are often treated as criminals. During the investigation, interrogation and testimony, a child suffers repeat violence, but this time on the part of the authorities," Pavlenko said.
