On Wednesday, the defense of former interior minister Yuri Lutsenko lodged the appeal against the sentence of the Pechersky District Court of Kyiv in the criminal case on negligence while ordering surveillance over Valentyn Davydenko, a driver of the Ukrainian Security Council's ex-deputy head Volodymyr Satsiuk.

Lutsenko's attorney Oleksiy Bahanets said that they had little hope that the Court of Appeal could overturn the verdict.

"Our appeal against the last sentence of the court made up 52 pages of printed text. Why so many? We refute each sentence of accusation with reference to the requirements of the law and specific materials of the criminal case, which were been investigated during the trial. Actually, the whole sentence delivered by the judge on a charge of my client was completely refuted in the appeal," the web-site of the People’s Self-Defense Party quotes lawyer Oleksiy Bahanets.

"We hope only for the European Court of Human Rights," he said.
