Starting from September, Ukrainian pupils will study under the new state standards, education minister Dmytro Tabachnyk said at the meeting of the Board of the Education and Science, Youth and Sports Ministry of Ukraine, ForUm correspondent reports. The meeting was dedicated to the state of readiness of educational institutions to 2012/2013 school year and the introduction of new standards for primary education.

"According to the new state standards, all children will start to learn a foreign language from the first grade, and the computer science - from the second grade. Starting from 2013, the fifth grade students will learn a second foreign language," Tabachnyk said.

In addition, he said, every lesson in elementary school will have two physical pauses.
"For the first time, we met the requirement of a number of laws and increased the hours of the physical development up to three hours a week. The new state standards have a variable component: a mandatory part of the teaching load will be about 50% and the rest will be agreed by the teaching staff," the minister said.

In his view, this would allow teachers to prepare children more qualitatively.
