US President Barack Obama has congratulated President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych and Ukrainian people on Independence Day, press office of Ukraine's President reports.

In his letter to the President, Obama notes that since obtaining its independence Ukraine has taken important steps on democracy development and made important contributions into the global peace and stability.

"We remain loyal to our cooperation on development of democratic institutions and supremacy of law in Ukraine, on establishment of global peace and safety, on strengthening bilateral relations," the letter of US President says.

Earlier today, President Yanukovych also received congratulations from Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In his letter Putin points out that for Russia Ukraine is not just a neighbor and strategic partner, but a state, which shares common history, traditions and spiritual and cultural roots.

Russian President also underlines "productive character of open and intensive Ukrainian-Russian political dialogue, growth of bilateral trade, deepening of interregional contacts and intensification of cultural interchange."

Putin expresses assurance that further cooperation and realization of joint projects will bring benefits for both countries and wishes Yanukovych and Ukrainian people happiness and prosperity.
