Today, Ukraine celebrates the National Flag Day.
Eight years ago, on August 23 of 2004, then-President Leonid Kuchma signed a decree on the establishment of the National Flag Day of Ukraine.

In 2009, former President Viktor Yushchenko amended the decree establishing annual official flag-raising ceremony on August 23 in Ukraine.

The Flag Day used to be celebrated only in Kyiv at the municipal level. The capital celebrated this holiday on July 24. On this day in 1990, the blue and yellow flag was raised over the Kyiv mayor's office.

The national flag of Ukraine is a rectangular cloth that consists of two equal horizontal bands of blue and yellow colors.

Yellow is the color of wheat fields, bread and sun, and blue is the color of sky. The yellow-blue color scheme has been a symbol of Kievan Rus since the pagan times.
