On August 21, at its extraordinary session, the Kherson City Council granted Russian the status of regional language.

47 out of 56 City Council members registered in the session hall voted in favor of the decision. 6 members voted against the decision, one deputy abstained and two did not vote.

The decision was taken to implement the provisions of the law of Ukraine on national language policy.

Before the vote, Kherson mayor Volodymyr Saldo reported that according to the regional statistics department of Kherson region on the results of the 2001 census, 55.4% of the region residents consider themselves Ukrainians, and 45.3% - Russians. In the city of Kherson, the proportion is 56.2% and 42.5%, respectively.

Therefore, by taking this decision the Kherson City Council informs the residents of the city that Russian becomes the regional language in Kherson.
