On August 16, at its extraordinary session, the Sevastopil City Council decided on granting the Russian language the status of the regional language in the city.
All 54 deputies present unanimously voted for this decision (there are just 76 city council members).
The document was adopted in the framework of the implementation of provisions of the law on national language policy.
Just one issue was on the agenda of the session.
The City Council instructed the City Administration to provide for funding the activities related to the implementation of legal norms while forming the budget 2013, and to prepare the necessary changes in the regional program on the development of the Russian language and culture in Sevastopil till 2017.
The document notes that this decision was made taking into account the decision of the City Council of April 26, 2006 on measures to implement the European Charter for Regional or Minority languages in relation to the Russian language on the territory of Sevastopil.
Two standing committees of the City Council Control have been entrusted with executing of the decisions.
