Education and science, youth and sports minister of Ukraine Dmytro Tabachnyk proposes to open new school "Kyiv Rus" in Kyiv on the left bank.

"Given the fact that next year the public events to mark the 1025 anniversary of opening the first school in the ancient Kyiv will be held, the Ministry proposes to open school "Kyiv Rus" with advanced study of Russian language and history and culture of all the Slavic nations," the letter of minister to the head of the Kyiv City State Administration says.

The letter notes that the Russian language as obligatory subject is studied in Kyiv schools by more than 51 thousand students (22%), as optional subject – by more than six thousand students (2.5%). Of 510 Kyiv schools, 491 are schools with the Ukrainian language learning, 12 schools are with multiple languages learning, and 7 are with the Russian language learning.

In addition, the letter states that "the most difficult situation" is in the left-bank part of town where there are one school with the Russian language learning and five bilingual education establishments.

"This condition does not allow to fully meet the educational needs of ethnic minorities, who communicate in Russian language (the share of Russian population in Kyiv is 21%)," Tabachnyk justifies the need for a Russian-language school.

The minister expressed hope that the head of the KSCA will support this project.
