Economic losses from smoking amount 3.5 billion dollar, the head of the national project "Ukraine without smoke" Andriy Skypalsky said at a press conference on the topic: "A ban on tobacco advertising: the public and the State Inspectorate for Consumer Protection join their forces to run anti-smoking legislation."
According to him, the advertising promotes a rapid growth of tobacco smoking rate.
"Ten years ago Ukraine moved to the fourth place in the world for the spread of smoking due to the massive promotion of tobacco products. When the advertising of smoking was banned in the traditional mass media, Ukraine moved to the 29th place," he said.
He also stressed that every day in Ukraine 500 teenagers become smokers including through advertising.
Meanwhile, the head doctor of the Kyiv City Health Center, the candidate of medical science Otto Stoika said that the average age of onset of smoking in Ukraine is 12-13 years. However, among adults there is a tendency of decrease in the number of smokers.
"Today, only 29% people smoke against 36-37% of smokers in 2004-2005. There are 50% smokers among men, and 11% among women."
He recalled that on September 16, 2012, a law "On Amending certain legislative acts of Ukraine concerning a ban on tobacco advertising, sponsorship and promotion of tobacco products" will come into force.
According to expert, the law will help many Ukrainians to give up this bad habit.
