Ukraine has banned the pork export and its products from Zaporizhye region due to the outbreak of African swine fever (ASF), the chairman of the State Veterinary and Phytosanitary Service of Ukraine Volodymyr Horzheev has announced today at a press conference in Kyiv.

He said that today, on August 2, the ban comes into force and concerns the exportation of pigs and pork products from the territory of Zaporizhye region. He noted that during the negotiations with the leaders of the veterinary services of Russia and Belarus a verbal agreement was reached on the fact that Ukraine itself will impose a ban on the export of these products from Zaporizhye region, and these countries will not impose a ban on exports from the whole territory of Ukraine.

"Today I have talked to the head of the Russian Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Serhei Dankvert and the chief inspector of veterinary medicine in Belarus, and we have reached a verbal agreement that I myself will impose a ban on the export from Zaporizhye region. We have agreed that these states will not impose a ban on all products. We ourselves impose a ban on one region, and it will allow the rest of 24 regions to export their products," Horzheev said.

He also noted that today the question on the export prohibition of other animal products particularly dairy products from Zaporizhye region is under consideration.

"We are still considering the issue. The export of pork and meat will be banned unambiguously. I just want to talk about dairy products to know how the Russian side will take it," Horzheev noted.

He added that other countries have not imposed restrictions on the export of products from Ukraine yet. "Countries have not taken restrictive measures to Ukraine yet," he said.
