In Ukraine, the rise in passing grade from 124 to 140 points did not cause the reduce in the number of applicants, education and science, youth and sports minister of Ukraine Dmytro Tabachnyk told a press conference on the first results of the admission campaign 2012, ForUm correspondent reports.

"The rise in the core subjects passing grade up to 140 points did not prevent us from completing state demand and allowed us to select really the best applicants," he said.
The minister said the main goal of the rise was the attempt to admit to universities the outstanding students mostly.

"As a result, less than 100 applications were filed to 120 private Ukrainian universities. The Ukrainian Institute of Linguistics and Management and the Khmelnitsky Design University private universities received only one application each," Tabachnyk informed.

Thus, according to the minister, the fears of those who thought that the introduction of passing grade in 140 points will reduce the number applicants were not justified. "That did not happen. Most universities, predominantly state-owned, have high contests and mostly deal with the applicants, who scored more than 420 points during independent external testing," Tabachnyk summed up.
