Taras Shevchenko is not only a prominent Ukrainian poet, artist and philosopher, but he is an unconditional moral authority for our society, the first deputy prime minister of Ukraine Valeriy Khoroshkovsky said after the flower-laying ceremony at Taras Shevchenko monument, which was held on July 31 in Washington during a working visit of Khoroshkovsky to the USA.

The first deputy prime minister noted that long ago Shevchenko became one of the symbols of Ukraine, as Kyiv, the Dnieper River, the wide fields and the Carpathian Mountains. "His creative heritage is a foundation on which we build a strong and independent Ukrainian state," he stressed.

According to Khoroshkovsky, Shevchenko is respected not only in all parts of Ukraine, but also in all countries where the Ukrainians live. "That is why today we honor Kobzar here in Washington. And the ceremony of the 200th anniversary of Taras Shevchenko's birth which we will celebrate in 2014 should be held in all countries where the Ukrainians live," Khoroshkovsky said.
