Ukrainian Yana Shemyakina won the first gold medal of the Olympics in the fencing individual epee competition, the official website of the Olympic Games reported.
The Ukrainian athlete beat the German Brett Heidemann with the score 9:8 in the final.
As a reminder, in 1/16 finals she defeated the Russian fencer Lubov Shutova, in the eighth finals she beat the Romanian Anna Maria Bantsa, and in the quarterfinals – the Romanian Hermann Simon.
In the semifinals Shemyakina overcame the resistance of the Chinese Sun Yulin.
The final match of the epee competition was detained by the South Korean athlete’s demarche.
Eventually Sun Yulin from China won the bronze medal.
