Ukraine needs to reconstruct the irrigation system, the minister of agricultural policy and food of Ukraine Mykola Prysiazhniuk told a briefing in the Cabinet of Ministers, as ForUm correspondent reports.

"Scientists noted that the average temperature changes in Ukraine. It has risen by two degrees over the last 20 years. Crops like sugar beet and soybean that used to be cultivated in the south only are now moving to the center and the north. Today the government should actively reconstruct the irrigation systems to increase the amount of grain," the minister said.

He also reminded that today at the beginning of the meeting the Prime Minister Mykola Azarov instructed the Cabinet to work out the offers on reconstruction of the irrigation system.

"Only 0.5 million hectares remain under the irrigation system while there were 3.5 million hectares 20 years ago. Due to the imbalanced management by various owners, the costs were misused.
Following the instruction, we will prepare an offer within 10 days to raise funding, including investors’ funding," Prysiazhniuk said.

According to him, the irrigated land gives 2-2.5 times more yield, and vegetables don’t grow without irrigation at all.
