The President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych expressed his concern about the recent events taking place around the domestic media, ForUm learned from the president’s press office.

"The protection of freedom of speech and prevention of pressure on the media are the issues of crucial importance for a democratic state," Yanukovych said.

The President noted that the inspection of media during the election campaign have a negative impact on the political situation in the country. "The pluralism of opinions in the press is a guarantee for the democratic expression of will during the upcoming elections. The government must do everything possible to protect the rights of voters and the media," Yanukovych said.

The President instructed the Prosecutor General Viktor Pshonka and the chairman of the State Tax Service Oleksandr Klymenko to check the legality of initiating criminal proceedings against the Livyi Bereh (Left Bank) online newspaper and the TVi TV channel.
