The Prime Minister of Ukraine Mykola Azarov requires accord special priority to road safety in summer, he said during the Cabinet’s meeting, ForUm correspondent reports.

"Now in summer, people often travel, there are many children on the road, so special attention should be paid to road safety. The high death rate in road accidents has become an epidemic that kills and maims people. During the first half of 2012, more than 17,000 people were injured and killed," said Azarov.

According to the head of the government, the increase in the number of vehicles and speed sets new requirements for passenger traffic.

"The terrible accident near Chernihiv, which killed 15 citizens of Russia, was followed by several other large accidents. Often the transporters neglect safety of people. When you get into a bus, there is no guarantee that vehicle is in good working conditions and a driver is in good health condition. On intercity routes they pick-up the speed of racers and are rarely punished. People ask: why do not the local authorities control the transporters giving them permission for transportation? There are controllers, but there is no result," the PM said.
