By the end of 2012 perinatal centers of the third class will be built in Crimea, Poltava, Ternopil and Luhanks regions, deputy health minister Raisa Moiseyenko told the press conference "Regionalization of perinatal assistance in Ukraine", ForUm correspondent reports.

"The survival of newborns depends not on expensive medical devices, but mostly on timely medical assistance. Regionalization of perinatal assistance is a very important step," the official said.

The deputy minister also informed that about half of children are born prematurely. "With introduction of modern technologies and proper training of medical staff we will improve the survival chances of newborns. As for the death rate among newborns, unfortunately we cannot report good results. However, the figures tend to decrease," Moiseyenko said and added that for the last year the death rate among newborns (the first week) had decreased from 70% to 57.2%.

In her turn, deputy head of the Health Ministry department on motherhood and childhood Valentyna Kolomiychuk informed that the regionalization of perinatal assistance in the majority of developed countries started at the end of 70ies of the last century.
