The law on language policy must meet the norms of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages, President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych said in the course of informal meeting with the Club of chief editors of CIS, Baltic States and Georgia.

"I am convinced that we must follow the world practice," he said and added that the language issue is too much politicized. According to the President, the citizens have no problems using both Ukrainian and Russian languages, while the politicians 'enkindle conflicts' around the matter.

"The European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages is the best example for the matter. Experts must estimate whether the given law meets the Charter," Yanukovych noted.

"The authors of the law assured me the document had passed the expertise by Venice Commission. Soon we will see if it is true. Finally we will find a solution to take the language issue off the table," the President said.
