Every Ukrainian woman should give birth to two or three children to maintain the country's population at its current level - 45.5 million people, the deputy director of the department of maternal and child’s care, sanatorium department of the Healthcare Ministry of Ukraine Valentyna Kolomeychuk told a press conference, ForUm correspondent reports.
"Currently, the world population increases, however, the population of Ukraine, unfortunately, decreases and the negative population growth is maintained," she said.
According to her, the problem of population growth relates the fact that the majority of women of reproductive age (20-30 years) undergo a phase of socialization and development. "When a woman has built a career, she’s already 35-40 years old and the process of childbearing can be more difficult," the representative of the Healthcare Ministry said.
She also reported that the Healthcare Ministry oppose to banning abortions at the legislative level, as it may lead negative results, doing illegal abortions and an increase in mortality among mothers. "The unwanted pregnancy rate in Ukraine is higher than in the EU countries, but we have a positive trend. If in 2010 new mothers denied more than 700 children, then in 2011 the number of the abandoned children was 599, " Kolomeychuk underlined.
In addition, according to her data, there are more than 840.000 infertile couples in Ukraine. "The official statistics may be significantly underestimated, because people, who cannot have children, often do not seek professional help. First of all, it concerns the infertile men," the specialist summed up.
