The Ukrainian peacekeepers in Liberia were awarded the UN medals "In the Service of Peace" on behalf of the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, ForUm learned from the Defense Ministry of Ukraine press office.

Congratulating the Ukrainian peacekeepers on the outstanding event, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations in liberia, Mr. Moustapha Soumaré thanked the Ukrainian troops for the faithful execution of the tasks of the mission.

"Ukraine is an active participant in UN peacekeeping since the first years of its independence. In Liberia, the Ukrainian military personnel perform the most difficult job: conduct combat patrols of the airspace and borders of the country, operates passenger and cargo air transport, provide air support for ground troops, conduct evacuation of the wounded and the sick," Soumaré said.

From the beginning of the mission in Liberia, the personnel of the 56th separate helicopter detachment carried 300 passengers and nearly 180 tons of cargo. Ukrainian crew has spent in the African sky about 2 400 hours, conducting 1000 688 flights on Mi-8MT and Mi-24P helicopters.

Among the main tasks of the Ukrainian helicopter pilots in Liberia are: combat patrolling the country's borders with Sierra Leone, Guinea and Cote d'Ivoire, as well as transportation of personnel and relief supplies, food for peacekeeping units, mobile patrols, peacekeeping and military observers of the UN Mission in Liberia.
