In Ukraine, the number of fires, compared to last year, has increased, the chief inspector of the State Inspection of Technogenic Safety of Ukraine preventive works department Yuri Podhoretsky told a press conference, ForUm correspondent reports.

"For five months in 2012, 28,956 fires occurred in the settlements, compared to 23,282 fires over the same period last year. The number of fires has increased by 24%," he said.

According to him, the losses from the fires this year are amounted to more than 506 million UAH. In the last year they were amounted to 249 million UAH. "The increase in losses is 72%," Podhoretsky said.

He also reminded of the rules of fire safety in forests and parks during the holidays. According to him, the fires can be made only in designated areas with a dug of diameter not less than 1 meter around it. The fire must be made at least 10 meter distance from the nearest trees and shrubs.
