"The best coin of 2011" contest has been held in the National Bank of Ukraine. The jury of 18 judges has defined the winners in three nominations, ForUm corespondnet reports.

In the nomination "The best coin of the year" the winner is the coin "1000th anniversary of Sofia cathedral foundation", (silver, 500 g, 50 hrv. face value). The coin depicts reconstruction model of Sofia cathedral and a fresco fragment of mosaic altar of IX century.

In the nomination "Unique idea" the winner is the coin "20 years of Ukraine's independence (gold, 31.1 g, face value 100 hrv., as well silver and German silver variants). The coin depicts portraits of prominent historical figures (Yaroslav the Wise, Taras Shevchenko, Mykhailo Hrushevski, Bogdan Khmelnitski) and personified industries (airplane, harvester, ship and mine).

In the nomination "The best artistic solution" the winner is the coin after Lesya Ukrainka novel "Forest song" (silver, 62.2 g, face value 20 hrv.) The coin depicts the portrait of the writer Lesya Ukrainka and an episode from her novel "Forest song", featuring the forest pixie Mavka.

Deputy head of the jury Vera Rychakovska informed that total of 43 coins, issued in 2011, took part in the contest and they all deserved an award. "It was very difficult to determine the winners, and the rest of the coins had really narrow defeat," she added.
