The leader of the social movement "Ukrainian choice" Viktor Medvedchuk has offered the concept of changing the law on holding a nation-wide referendum. One of the points of the project is reducing the required number of signatures for national referendum initiation from 3 million to 500,000.

Viktor Medvedchuk compares the similar rules of the organization referendums in other European countries.

"It seems that the number of five hundred thousand signatures for a nation-wide referendum is optimal for a country with such population like in Ukraine. For example Italy with population of 60 million requires 500,000 signatures to initiate a referendum, and Portugal with its 10 million - 75 000. Where does this obviously overrated number for Ukraine in 3 million votes come from?" the politician asks.

The concept of legislative changes also offers to secure the right of people to adopt and amend the Constitution on the all-Ukrainian referendum, to dismiss the Verkhovna Rada, Cabinet of Ministers, heads of district governors, to adopt or abolish laws of Ukraine.
