The Druzhba Nova agro company has been refusing to pay rent and taxes for years. The local farmers are desperate as they get some pennies for the rent, meanwhile their lands are practically being exhausted. Thus, the residents of the five districts in Chernihiv region are ready to take drastic steps.
The Druzhba Nova agricultural society has owed six million UAH to the state. The farmers say that the company has underpaid them millions UAH for the rent of land plots. The first lawsuits against the company-renter were lodged in 2004. However, during this time the court has failed to determine why the agro company has been robbing the residents of one of the poorest regions of Ukraine for nearly ten years.
The Chernihiv farmers, outraged by the activities of the Druzhba Nova company, have already started to hold the protest rallies. More than a hundred residents of the nearby villages held public meetings to protest against the illegal occupation of land shares and the violation of their property rights.
"They have rented the land for the sum of money, which do not meet the required standards. People just get ill-timed pennies. The company seized the lands and has been exhausting them for the past 5-6 years, in fact, killing the soil. However, the local farmers do not have a possibility to work. Our problem is not being solved either at the district or at the regional level," the outraged citizen of village Berezhivka Serhiy Fesan said.
The local citizens say that many of the rent contracts were signed in 2001-2004. According to them, the renter pays one and half percent and is not going to increase the rate.
