Russian Gazprom and Ukrainian Naftogas have signed an agreement on 2 billion dollar down payment for gas transit, Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller told journalists.

"With the agreement Gazprom grants a down payment in the amount of two billon dollars to Naftogaz for the gas transit to Europe. This agreement is of utmost importance in order to secure necessary volume of gas to be pumped into Ukrainian storage facilities to live through the autumn-winter period of 2012-13 smoothly," Miller said.

Earlier Gazprom expressed doubts in Ukraine's financial capacity to pump in necessary volume of gas for stable transit to Europe during coming winter.
