The government is carrying out a policy to provide Ukraine with energy independence within the next three or five years, Prime Minister of Ukraine Mykola Azarov wrote on his Facebook page.

"But it does not mean we will turn down energy cooperation with Russia. We just do not want to be 100% dependent on one country," Azarov explained.

Meanwhile, ecology minister Eduard Stavitski believes that Ukraine will obtain its energy independence in 2020.

"It's a fact. Ask me in 2020. If we do as planned then I am right," he said in an interview with "Zerkalo Nedeli. Ukraine" (Mirror Weekly)

According to his calculations, Ukraine consumes about 50 billion cu m of gas annually, while produces only 22-23 billion. Hence, the deficit is 28 billion cu m of gas.

"The basic scenario of gas mining on Yuzovkka area provides for 10-15 billion per year, while on the Olesska area - three-five billion. The licensed platforms of "Chernomorneftgas" on shallow marine shelf will give one-two billion already next year. Later on we will be able to produce eight-ten billion cu m," the official said.

"Current unreasonable gas price impedes our development. And it's very annoying, to say the least. We intend to get rid of this obstacle," Stavitski assured.
