The government continues systematic work to provide Ukraine with alternative gas supplies, Prime Minister of Ukraine Mykola Azarov told a briefing in Ashkhabad, ForUm learned from the Cabinet's press office.

According to Mr. Azarov, the issue on possible volumes of gas Turkmenistan could supply to Ukraine was discussed with the President of Turkmenistan. However, Azarov noted that the Ukrainian side insists on the implementation of agreements on free trade with the CIS, which give it the opportunity of free access to the gas transportation systems of the CIS countries.

The Prime Minister stressed that Ukraine is ready to participate in the projects for the Trans-Caspian gas pipeline construction within the process of hydrocarbon supplies diversification.

"This issue has been discussed today during my meeting with the President of Turkmenistan. It was also discussed earlier with the President of our country during the visit of the President of Turkmenistan to Ukraine. We will further the project’s implementation to the uttermost. It's in our interests. However, it is not on the agenda, it is rather a prospect," Azarov said. The Head of the government recalled that he had previously negotiated with the authorities of Qatar for providing alternative sources of gas. This question has been also raised during the visit of Ukrainian Prime Minister to Azerbaijan.
