The pilot project on children protection from information threatening their health and development will be launched on the Ukrainian national TV channels by the end of the year, the Head of Television and Radio National Board of Ukraine Volodymyr Manzhosov said at “Protection of children in media environment” roundtable, ForUm correspondent reports.
"It will be a new national graphics system. Certain icons will accompany television programs to enable parents to protect children from harmful content," he said.
According to the official, the icons system developing is carried out by a special interagency working group, which has studied the experience of the EU countries in this field. "Today there is no effective system, which would protect children from information harmful to their psyche, at the legislative level. As a result, the programs with elements of violence, eroticism and abuse appear on Ukrainian TV channels," Manzhosov mentioned.
The Council of Europe project (European Standards Promoting in the Ukrainian media environment) manager Olha Sedova stressed that the new graphics system can be ineffective unless there is a self-regulatory mechanism of channels.
According to Mrs. Sedova, the same happened in Poland, where a similar mechanism of labeling content failed because the TV channels owners refused to fulfill the undertaken obligations to protect children.
