The European Union aims to sign the Association Agreement with Ukraine, but only subject to this country's compliance with the spirit of political association, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton said following the meeting of the European Council on Foreign Relations in Brussels on Monday, UKRINFORM reports.

She said during the lunch they discussed the latest developments in Ukraine, which are a source of concern. The EU and Ukraine initialed the agreement on association and free trade in late March, and there is the will to sign it, but Ukraine needs to demonstrate that it complies with the spirit of this political association, Ashton said, voicing hope that Ukraine will properly respond to politically motivated processes that will ensure independence of the judiciary and make selective justice impossible.

The High Representative also stressed that the EU will closely monitor the parliamentary elections in Ukraine in October. The conditions of the campaign and election will be crucial for assessment of these elections, she said.
