The government of Ukraine will make every effort to preserve our state’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, and strengthen democratic values, stability, and security, President Viktor Yanukovych said in his speech at Victory Day festivities at the Independence Square in Kyiv, ForUm learned from the presidential press office.

"We will fulfill our duty before the generations of winners and do everything to prevent new wars or conflicts, to preserve the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine, democracy, internal civil peace and security," he said.

According to Viktor Yanukovych, there are lots of alarming trends in the world of today: aggravating economic problems, increasing competition for resources, redistribution of the spheres of influence, religious and ethnic extremism being on the rise. "Populists of all kind crave power at any cost, endangering the peace, serenity and stability of millions of people. These threats also affect Ukraine," he said.

The President said that World War II had broken out as a result of spread of fascist ideology. "European countries’ weakness mutual dissociation prevented them from stopping the Nazi plague, which brought fire down on the whole Europe in a short time," he said, adding also that a decade of global economic depression had been another cause of the conflict.
