Characteristics of Ukrainian coal do not let to use it in metallurgy, so it must be used in power production. Such conclusion was made by participants of the round table "Coal market in Ukraine - problems and perspectives."
Metallurgical industry has been actively implementing the technology of pulverized coal fuel, refusing from natural gas in blast-furnace practice. To use similar technology the industry needs high-quality coke, and consequently high-quality coal, which is very scarce in Ukraine, participants of the roundtable noted.
"Unfortunately, by some quirk of nature our Donbass coal is the most sulfur in the world," director general of the "Ukrkoks" assosiation Anatoly Starovoit said.
According to experts the most logical and right way is to use Ukrainian coal in the power industry.
According to the data of chairman of the Independent trade union of miners Mykhailo Volynets, 60% of heat and 25% of electricity in Ukraine are produced from gas. "This is the most common use of gas and the most ineffective," director of "Effective investments" company Ihor Liski believes.
Ukraine has everything necessary to replace gas with domestic coal, Liski believes. It is just necessary to bring investments into the programs on re-equipment of power plants, in particular into the project on water-coal fuel.
According to the data, provided by the official, the use of coal fuel for production of heat and electricity in Ukraine will save up to 42 billion cu m of natural gas.
