The number of cases of stealing information from plastic payment cards has increased in Ukraine, deputy head of the Interior Ministry department on cybercrimes Leonid Tymchenko informed.

According to the official, in 2011 the police registered 45 cases of stealing banking information. In particular, criminals install the so-called "cover plates" - devices, which look like some parts of an ATM machine, but are aimed at reading information from plastic cards.

First of all, such devices copy PIN-codes. In such a way it is easy to steal cashless means and Ukraine is at the threshold of outburst of this kind of crime, Tymchenko says. "With forthcoming Euro-2012 championship, criminals probably are preparing and testing various devices, with the help of which they can steal information from plastic cards," he said.

The Interior Ministry recommends the owners of the plastic cards to be more careful and to use only trusted ATM machines, to pay attention to logotypes and, after all, before using it to examine the ATM machine and make sure it does not have any accessory devices.
