Head of the State Penitentiary Service of Ukraine Oleksandr Lisitskov has reported to the parliament about main problems of his department, ForUm correspondent reports.

According to the official, there are 32 acting detention facilities in Ukraine, and the situation with these facilities is very complicated. In particular, buildings and premises of 14 prisons are 100 years old, buildings of other five detention facilities are 200 years old, while Lviv detention facility is over 400 years old. In addition, 26 detention facilities are located in city centers.

Lisitskov has complained about deficit of living area, lack of modern equipment, problems with production, as well as high taxation and poor financing.

The official informed MPs that there are 1767 detainees serving life in Ukraine. Every seventh detainee of the total number of prisoners is sentenced for intentional murder, while every fourth is sentenced for robbery with extreme violence.

Lisitskov added that the majority of detainees serve not the first term.
