The Pechersky District Court of Kyiv has announced that the guilt of former Acting Defense Minister of Ukraine Valeriy Ivashchenko, who was charged with abuse of office for signing a plan on the reorganization of the Feodosiya Shipbuilding and Mechanical Plant, has been proved.

"The court finds that the guilt of the defendants has been proved by evidence collected during the trial," a member of the panel of judges, Oksana Tsarevych, announced this while reading out the verdict on Thursday.

According to the verdict, Ivashchenko has been sentenced to five years of imprisonment, has been deprived of the status of the second rank state official and has been banned from holding administrative and executive positions in institutions and enterprises of all forms of ownership for three years.

The verdict also says that custody remains to be the measure of restrain, but the term spent in the pre-trial detention facility (from August 2010) is included into the imprisonment term.

The verdict says the court has taken into consideration the extenuating circumstance, in particular absence of previous criminal charges, state decorations, positive comments, as well as bad health. The court has also unblocked Ivashchenko's property and bank accounts.
