Ukraine has fully fulfilled the obligation it had assumed at the Washington Nuclear Security Summit to remove highly enriched uranium from its territory, President Viktor Yanukovych said in his speech at the 2012 Seoul Nuclear Security Summit, according to the presidential press office.

The President also informed that Ukraine makes efforts to improve the legal framework for physical protection of nuclear facilities and materials based on IAEA documents.

Viktor Yanukovych also spoke about such a topical problem, as prolonging the operation of nuclear power plant units that approach the end of their operation time. According to him, experts in many countries are working to develop measures to control such units’ condition and postpone their decommissioning.

"Ukraine has considerable experience in this area, which is regarded positively by the IAEA. We are ready to cooperate in this field with all interested countries and will be happy to share it," he said. The President said that our state is cooperating closely with Japan to mitigate the Fukushima disaster consequences and is ready to share the expertise gained during fighting the Chornobyl disaster with other states.
