Ukraine should celebrate the 200th anniversary of Taras Shevchenko’s birth in 2014 at a worthy level, President Viktor Yanukovych said in a speech during this year’s presentation of the Shevchenko Prize, ForUm learned from the presidential press office.

"The event’s scale is such that we cannot allow ourselves to celebrate a few days or even a month of Shevchenko. We should think about the Year of Shevchenko in Ukraine and the world," said Viktor Yanukovych.

The President particularly emphasized the importance of developing a comprehensive program of festivities, to tell about Shevchenko to Ukraine and the world. Currently, he said, there are more than 100 Shevchenko museums in Ukraine and about a dozen of such museums in other countries.

“In 2014, they should become the ambassadors of Shevchenko’s word, opening his genius and Ukraine to the world,” President Yanukovych said.

In this regard the President also emphasized the importance of involving the business community in the celebration, as it is beyond the capabilities of only the state budget.
