Ukraine's state oil and gas company Naftogaz has denied allegations of siphoning off Russian gas intended for Europe, UKRINFORM reports referring to the company's official website.

"Since the beginning of 2012, the national joint-stock company Naftogaz of Ukraine has not tapped a single cubic meter of natural gas from the transit volumes that were shipped by OJSC Gazprom to Europe. In accordance with the terms of the current contract for the supply of natural gas between Naftogaz of Ukraine and Gazprom, the daily consumption of gas is not recorded by Ukraine, whereas quarterly amounts of energy supplies are determined," Naftogaz said.

In February 2012, Naftogaz informed Gazprom about the possibility of making additional gas supplies to European consumers at the expense of gas from Ukrainian gas storage facilities. "If the Russian side turned to us, we could have helped European consumers in the situation with a critical reduction in gas supplies, in the same way as we have helped Turkey," Naftogaz deputy chief executive Vadym Chuprun said.

Earlier, Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller said that on certain days in February 2012, up to 40 million cubic meters of Russian gas intended for Europe remained on Ukrainian territory.
