The death rate in Ukraine in 2011 fell by 4.8% compared to 2010, but it still exceeds the birth rate.

Olha Pochekina, the head of the department of legal and methodological support for ensuring the activities of the bodies of state civil registration at the State Registration Service of Ukraine, announced this at a press conference on Wednesday, according to UKRINFORM.

"Unfortunately, at present the death rate in Ukraine still exceeds the birth rate," she said.

Pochekina noted that 505,754 births were registered in Ukraine last year, which was 1% more than in 2010. The increase in the birth rate was reported in most regions in Ukraine.

At the same time, according to the State Registration Service of Ukraine, 664,589 Ukrainians died last year, or 4.8% less than in 2010, and the reduction of the death rate was recorded in all regions in Ukraine, Pochekina said.
