Introduction of a new system of legal protection of a person, the society, and the state from criminal offenses and improvement of criminal proceedings will significantly contribute to the development of the rule of law in Ukraine, President Viktor Yanukovych said in a speech at the ceremony of swearing in judges first appointed to the position, ForUm learned from the presidential press office.

He stressed that the new Criminal Procedure Code that had been introduced to the Parliament seeks to achieve these goals. "The Parliament will soon pass this document, which is long-awaited and necessary for the Ukrainian society," said Viktor Yanukovych.

The President added that the law on the humanization of responsibility for economic crimes also aims to promote the principles of humanism and to reduce the use of detention as a preventive measure. "This law was an important step towards improving the protection of human rights and improving the investment climate in the state," Viktor Yanukovych said.

As a next step to improve the method of selecting judges, Yanukovych proposes to introduce special training for candidates.  "This step would allow the future judges to better learn the trade, improve their skills, turning them from theoretical into practical ones," Viktor Yanukovych said.

According to the President, judges’ professionalism is a major component of building in Ukraine the system of just and fair courts that protect the rights of every citizen.
