Establishing a trilateral gas consortium is extremely topical in the modern conditions, President Viktor Yanukovych said during a discussion in the framework of the 48th Munich Security Conference, presidential press office reports. "We are currently promoting this offer and believe it is very important and timely," he said, reminding that Ukraine had first suggested the idea of such a consortium back in 2003.

The President stressed that Ukraine fully recognizes its responsibility for the reliability of gas transit. However, he said, when considering energy issues it is important to take into account such questions as energy sources’ diversification and energy efficiency. "The questions of energy efficiency and diversification will always be urgent and acute. Without the alternative sources of energy supply and in such a tremendous dependence we have been in for all these years there is no room for talk – specific action is required," said Viktor Yanukovych.

"We have always believed and still believe that most of the issues in the Ukraine-Russia-Europe triangle can be resolved," he said, pointing to the need for transparent and clear rules of energy policies.
