Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, who leaves for Munich, Germany, on Friday to participate in a security conference, has told the German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung that any attempts to politicize a criminal case opened against former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko are harming the course of its investigation, UKRINFORM reports.

"We are, after all, talking about criminal cases, for example, tax evasion. Only the court can answer such questions," the president said, adding that Ukraine has an independent judicial system.

However, he said that the legal system needs a thorough reform and that new legislation meeting all European standards is being developed. Reform should also be conducted at judicial authorities, prosecutor's office and courts, he said.

As reported, Tymoshenko was sentenced to seven years in prison for abuse of office due to the signing of gas contracts with Russia in 2009. She is serving her prison sentence in the Kachanivska penal colony in Kharkiv.
