Ukraine does its best to to fulfill its obligations to the Council of Europe, President Viktor Yanukovych told reporters in Kirovohrad, when asked to make comments on the recent PACE resolution on Ukraine, ForUm learned from the presidential press office.

Viktor Yanukovych also said that Ukraine would certainly continue improving its legislation to protect human rights in line with the European standards. "It is our duty and we are working on it," he said. An important step in this direction Viktor Yanukovych called the adoption of a new Criminal Procedure Code that he had brought in to the Verkhovna Rada.

According to President Yanukovych, another important issue in this area is amending the Constitution. "This is a very complex task. The consensus of two thirds of the Verkhovna Rada deputies is needed to push it forward," he said, adding that much would depend on the results of parliamentary elections in the autumn of 2012.

When asked about the possibility of Ukraine joining the Customs Union, the President said it would depend on the performance of the union. "There is no answer yet to this question. We do not yet have any results of the Customs Union, at least economic. We will see, how the Customs Union works, what kind of preferences and benefits it promises, and which part of the process Ukraine can join to make it profitable for us," said Viktor Yanukovych.

"If it meets our national interests, then we will see how to solve this issue," he said.
