The Libyan side is conducting an investigation into possible cooperation between Ukrainian citizens detained in Libya and the regime of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, the head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry's information policy department, Oleh Voloshyn, said at a briefing on Tuesday, according to UKRINFORM.

"The investigation continues, and the Libyan side noted that this was an investigation into cooperation in the military-technical sphere with the Gaddafi regime. The Libyan side promised to release those who are not involved in this," he said.

Voloshyn said that 22 Ukrainians detained in Libya had violated immigration laws, when they entered the country in the middle of July 2011, at the height of the conflict.

"There are questions as to who are these people, what were they doing in Libya in the heart of the conflict, whom did they work for and what occupations do they really have?" he said.

However, the Ukrainian diplomat ruled out the possibility that they might be snipers or soldiers of the former Libyan leader.

The Foreign Ministry spokesman said that "up to 3,000 Ukrainian citizens, mainly nurses and doctors, were in Libya before the Gaddafi regime was overthrown."
