Shakhtar Donetsk and Ukraine international goalkeeper Olexandr Rybka has received a two-year ban from UEFA after failing a drugs test, the club said Monday.

The 24-year-old Rybka tested positive for a banned substance after a November league match against FC Karpaty and is now ruled out of Euro 2012, pending an appeal.

The club reportedly claimed Rybka, who was immediately suspended while UEFA considered the punishment, had innocently taken weight-loss pills, though admitted failing to consult club doctors.

"From FC Shakhtar’s point of view, this is an extremely severe verdict which is not quite proportional to the footballer’s offence," Shakhtar said in a website statement, according to RIA Novosti.

"In this regard, Shakhtar will lodge an appeal with the relevant bodies of UEFA."
