The Commemorative Conference to honor the International Holocaust Remembrance Day and the 70th Anniversary of the Babi Yar Tragedy will be held January 25, 2012 at the United Nations Headquarters. The event is supported by permanent missions of Ukraine and Israel to the UN.

"The commemorative conference will start with speeches by Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN Yuriy Serheyev, Permanent Representative of Israel to the UN Prosora Ron, as well as Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information Kiyotaka Akasaka," the UN News Centre says, according to UKRINFORM.

The conference will be moderated by the Professor of International Relations at Columbia University in New York, former Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN Valeriy Kuchinsky.

This week New York begins a series of events to mark the International Holocaust Remembrance Day. This year it is dedicated to the theme "Children and the Holocaust."

The UN and the international community will pay tribute to a half million Jewish children who perished in this tragedy, as well as tens of thousands of children of other peoples - the victims of the Nazis and their accomplices.

70 years ago, Babi Yar - a ravine in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine - became a site of mass executions of Jews, Gypsies and Soviet prisoners of war.

Scientists say 100,000 to 150,000 people were shot in Babi Yar. The best-known and documented tragedy took place on September 29-30, 1941. Those days 33,770 Jews were killed in Babi Yar.
