Ukraine and Russia are the leaders of the region on growth rate of AIDS and tuberculosis cases, executive director of Global fund on fight against AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria Michael Kazachkin told a briefing, ForUm correspondent reports.

According to the official, in the counties with the widest spread of these diseases the epidemics either have reached the peak and going down or stop growing, while in Ukraine and Russia the tendency of growing continues. "It is the result of economic and social difficulties and poverty of the population," he said.

Kozachkin states that Ukraine successfully cures HIV, but still needs to solve a number of important problems. In particular, Ukraine needs to extend expansion of replacement therapy on the larger number of drug addicts in order to reduce the growth rate of HIV/AIDS epidemic and to provide proper treatment of tuberculosis in prisons.

According to the official, at the meeting with Ukraine's PM Mykola Azarov the latter assured that Ukraine will expand the introduction of replacement therapy.

In her turn, head of the state service on fighting HIV/AIDS and other socially dangerous diseases Tetyana Oleksandryna informed that the state plans to finance the treatment of 47 thousand AIDS patients, while now only 21 thousand of AIDS infected are getting state financed treatment.
