Illegal sale of fir-trees on New Year eve has decreased in Ukraine, in some regions by almost 50%, compared to the previous year.
According to the State agency on forest resources, officials of the agency held over 15,000 check raids on the eve of the New Year holidays. As a result, nearly 5,000 illegally felled trees were revealed, offenders paid fines worth of UAH 54,000.
Illegal cutting of fir-and pine trees has significantly decreased due to innovation - special information chips implanted into every tree with data of origin of the tree. This innovation helps to reveal illegally cut trees and scares many poachers away, the State agency on forest resources says.
