State enterprise Mykolayiv Mechanical Engineering Plant (Mykolayiv, Ukraine's south) made and handed over to the customer, the Armed Forces of Iraq, nine armored transport vehicles BTR-80 UP, director of the enterprise Oleksandr Shvets has said, according to UKRINFORM.

"The Polish company is a subcontractor in this order. This contract has been frozen for over five years and in the second half of the year we managed to start its fulfillment. Works were resumed due to the fact that we convinced the customer to make an advance payment for the enterprise," Shvets said.

In October 2011, the plant has handed over five BTR-80 UP to the Iraqi customer.

Currently, a new development of the plant, the armored transport vehicle Svitiaz, is being prepared for the Ukrainian Army.

In addition, BTR-7, developed and made at the plant, has successfully passed tests at the United Arab Emirates, having passed 3,000 kilometers without going out of order in the desert. This is the main part of a tender on the purchase of weaponry for the Armed Forces of the United Arab Emirates. A winner will receive a contract for supply of 600 battle machines. The Mykolayiv enterprise remains to be the main claimant as regards this contract.
